Edouard Henri Avril (1849 — 1928) was a French painter and commercial artist. Under a pseudonym was illustrator of erotic literature.
Avril studied art in various Paris salons. From 1874-1878 he was at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.When he was commissioned to illustrate Théophile Gautier’s novel Fortunio, he adopted the pseudonym Paul Avril.
Soon he had a certain reputation, and received many commissions to illustrate important authors and the «gallant literature» of the day, an erotic way. These books were sold in small editions on a subscription basis, organized by collectors. He is considered the father of the erotic painting.
